Deforestation Report (SAD) December 2013

SAD were detected only 56 square kilometers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. 59% of the forest area of ​​the Brazilian Amazon was covered by clouds.

In December 2013, the majority (59%) of the forest area of ​​the Brazilian Amazon was covered by clouds, a value higher than in December 2012 (56%), hindering the detection of deforestation and forest degradation. The States with the largest cloud cover were Pará (81%), Amapá (79%) and Tocantins (65%). Under these conditions, were detected by SAD only 56 square kilometers of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. This represents a decrease of 32% compared to December 2012 when the deforestation totaled 82 square kilometers. Of this total, 39% occurred in Mato Grosso, followed by Amazonas (28%), Acre (18%), Rondônia (8%) and Pará (6%)
The deforestation accumulated from August 2013 to December 2013, corresponding to the first five months of the current deforestation calendar totaled 424 square kilometers. There was a reduction of 67% over the previous period (August 2012 to December 2012) when the deforestation totaled 1,288 square kilometers.
Degraded forests totaled 32 square kilometers in December 2013. Compared to December 2012 there was a reduction of 88% when the forest degradation totaled 261 square kilometers. The large majority (92%) occurred in Mato Grosso, followed by Amazonas (3%), Rondônia (3%), Pará (1%) and Roraima (1%).
The forest degradation accumulated from August 2013 to December 2013 totaled 180 square kilometers. Compared to the previous period (August 2012 to December 2012) there was a reduction of 75% when the forest degradation totaled 711 square kilometers.
