In the period between August 2022 and July 2023, 11,442 hectares of forestland were harvested in Roraima State, Brazil. This number represents an approximate increase of 584% compared to the previous year, when the harvested area was only 1,671 hectares. From the timber harvesting map, 18% (2,103 hectares) was conducted legally while 82% (9,319 hectares) occurred without authorization. The majority of this illicit harvesting, approximately 81% (7,531 hectares), happened in private rural properties, while 18% happened in agrarian reform settlements (857 hectares) and unassigned lands (810 hectares). The remaining 1% was located on other categories of land use.

ASSESSMENT OF LEGALITY

In the absence of data from the Environmental Secretariat of the state of Roraima (OEMA), the data presented in this report were obtained exclusively from the SisCom system of the IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). However the SisCom system is notorious for being outdated, which may result in inconsistencies in the information presented. For each mapped timber extraction, the existence of a license for the Sustainable Forest Management Plan was verified, with its validity in compliance with the period of analysis of this work.
