Imazon (Amazon Institute of People and the Environment) is a Brazilian research institution that promotes conservation and sustainable development in the Amazon. Our history began in 1990 in the city of Belém, Pará, where our head office is still located. Since our founding, we have been dedicated to research and propose solutions to problems with the use and conservation of natural resources in the Amazon.
In 30 years of existence, Imazon has published approximately 700 technical papers as articles in international scientific periodicals, and more than 100 books and booklets to support decision-making by the public sector and provide specialized knowledge to the community.
All of our expertise in research and monitoring of the Amazon puts us in a position of global leadership in data and technology that serve as a reference for several organizations worldwide. Our work at Imazon is based on scientific rigor, empirical approach and search for solutions. That methodology is so effective and consistent that it has served as a model for other institutions to map different biomes in Brazil and the world, and even create the Google Earth Engine platform.
Since 2008, Imazon has been releasing a monthly Deforestation Bulletin (SAD) This publication presents independent and transparent data on deforestation and degradation in the Brazilian Amazon, using the latest technology to inform changes in behavior that will lead to significant reductions in forest destruction, and favor sustainable development.
We defend models de sustainable development in the Amazon region that can raise general income and employment, while respecting irreplaceable natural resources. Those models are taken to various local communities and also to public agencies.

Imazon respects, values and encourages the sustainable use of forest wealth. Some of our projects work directly in building capacity for sustainable agriculture and resource extraction activities, as well as promoting reforestation activities, with training for environmental agents and local communities.
As part of this activity, we produce a weekly Forest Product Price Table.
Understanding the importance of public management for sustainable development in the Amazon, Imazon supports the strengthening of environmental agencies in municipalities with critical levels of deforestation. Over the last 10 years, Imazon has capacitated 700 technicians at Municipal Secretariats who have received training in the best procedures in enforcement, and denouncing and notifying polluting activities.
