System for Monitoring Timber Harvesting (Simex): Mapping logging in Amazonas State – August 2022 to July 2023

Several authors. System for Monitoring Timber Harvesting (Simex): Mapping logging in Amazonas State – August 2022 to July 2023. Belém: Imazon, Idesam, Imaflora e ICV.

The analyses indicated that, from August 2022 to July 2023, a total of 50,037 hectares of tropical forest were logged for timber extraction in the state of Amazonas. This figure is 1% lower than the previous period (2021 to 2022), when the mapped exploitation reached 50,448 hectares. Of this total, 23% (11,353 hectares) of the extraction was authorized through an operating license, while 77% (38,684 hectares) occurred without authorization. This fact is quite significant when compared to the previous period. Among the unauthorized extractions, he majority, 78% (30,199 hectares), was detected on private rural properties (CAR); 17% (6,407 hectares) on Indigenous Lands; 3% (1,191 hectares) on undesignated lands; and 1% (554 hectares) on Conservation Units.

ASSESSMENT OF LEGALITY

Due to the absence of information from the State Environmental Agency (OEMA) of Amazonas, the data presented in this report were obtained exclusively from the Shared Environmental Information System (SisCom), which may lead to inconsistencies due to the lack of system updates. For each mapped timber extraction, the existence of a license for the Sustainable Forest Management Plan was verified, ensuring its validity in accordance with the period of analysis of this work. It is important to note that among the layers analyzed here (CAR, UC, TI), there are overlaps of around 10% in their areas, which should be addressed by public authorities.
